Lake Maggiore, one of the largest of the Italian peninsula, spread over an area of 212 sq km; has a perimeter of 170 km and a length of 54 km (the largest among the Italian lakes), the maximum width of 10 km .
Lake Maggiore is situated at 194 meters height above sea level, and reaches the maximum depth of 380 meters in front of the village of Cannero. In its waters we find eleven islands, including the famous and beautiful Borromean Islands, in the arm of the lake called Gulf Borromeo, opposing Stresa and Pallanza, the Brissago Islands, in the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore and the Castelli di Cannero, three rocky islets where there are the ruins of ancient fortifications. Set in pre-Alps, Lake Maggiore, of clear glacial origin, has the frame of different types of landscapes, from sweet hills in the south, to the eternally snow-capped peaks of the Alps in the northern zone.
